Did you know that many of the Fantasy stories, movie soundtracks, and cinematic universes we love today can be traced back to a 19th-century composer?
Long before The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Marvel, or Game of Thrones, Richard Wagner was creating vast fantasy worlds filled with gods, magical rings, dragons, heroes, and apocalyptic battles. His epic four-part opera cycle, The Ring of the Nibelung, pioneered many storytelling techniques that later became staples of modern fantasy franchises.
In this video, we explore how Wagner revolutionized worldbuilding, inspired generations of writers and filmmakers, and helped shape the way movies use music today. From hidden orchestras and immersive theaters to the invention of leitmotifs that influenced legendary film composers like John Williams, Wagner's impact is everywhere.

Richard Wagner was a committed and obsessive antisemite. His 1850 essay “Das Judenthum in der Musik” (“Jewishness in Music”) contains the roots of modern antisemitism. In it, Wagner argues at length that Jews were supposedly incapable of creating art independently. In essence, he claimed that everything they produced was trivial and ridiculous. He accused Jews of merely stealing and piecing together musical elements for effect. On the occasion of its 150th anniversary, the Bayreuth Festival stated that it was aware of its historical responsibility — both regarding Richard Wagners antisemitic views and the later close ties between the festival, members of the Wagner family and representatives of National Socialism.
