A doctor named H.L. Sutherland gave a speech in 1905 arguing for complete racial segregation. And he did it calmly. Officially. Using medical facts, Bible verses, and logic that almost works.
My family was in Louisiana in 1905. They were being counted in that census, living in the world this speech was helping to create.
So I read the actual document. Not someone else's summary. Not what historians said about it. The real words. And as I read it, as a historian, as someone who researches family history, as a Christian, I kept noticing the same thing: he takes real facts and twists them all in one direction. I wanted to show you exactly how that works. Because understanding the mechanism matters.

Come join me on a new docu-series that explores identity, racial tensions in the South during the 20th century, and the unique experiences of those who historically called Louisiana home.
My name is Danielle Romero, and all my life, I have romanticized Louisiana.
Growing up in New York, it represented a place where I could step back the sepia-toned life of my great grandmother, Lola Perot, who died before I was born.
Now, it was time to go back to Louisiana--although I had no idea what the truth would be or what questions to ask---who was Lola really? Who were we?
