The Game is a remake of A Christmas Carol. David Fincher just left out the Christmas.
No snow, no ghosts. A rich man with nobody left in his life, a company that takes his money, his house and his name, and a rooftop waiting at the end of it.
Michael Douglas signed and the budget tripled overnight. Fincher threw out twelve rewrites and shot the first draft instead. He gave the screenwriter a note nobody in Hollywood had ever given him. Jodie Foster was in this movie until a fight over what to shoot on day one. And the entire crew flew to Mexico for three minutes of screen time.
There is exactly one thing you cannot cut from A Christmas Carol. Seventeen years later, Fincher admitted that is the one thing he never solved.
