Stuttgart is a city you only fully understand once you look at it from above.
The entire inner city sits inside a narrow valley basin — the famous Kessellage — which shapes traffic, air quality, and how the city is built. At the same time, Stuttgart is the home of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, two of the world’s most prestigious car brands, along with countless engineering and tech firms. And right in the middle of this constrained geography, the city is currently transforming its rail hub and redeveloping one of the largest inner-city areas in Germany: Stuttgart 21.
In this video, we explore:
• Stuttgart’s unique basin geography and what it means for traffic and air circulation
• The urban fabric on the slopes, with hillside villas and green corridors
• The role of Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and other engineering firms in shaping the region
• How the Stuttgart 21 project aims to reconstruct the station and open up a new district
