* In this episode of 'Listening in', I explore how Stanley Kubrick and Gordon Stainforth used the music of Penderecki (De Natura Sonoris no. 1 and no. 2, Kanon etc...) to create an intense, and creepy soundtrack for 'The Shining'. Find out about how the music was manipulated to fit the shots*, and also how they achieved the manic and 'over-the-top' feel for the film using the score.
*In the essay, there is a point where I imply that some shots have been altered to fit the music. I have since found out, from emailing Gordon Stainforth, that this was only done in one instance. For almost all of the scenes, it was the music that was manipulated to fit the shots and not the other way around as the music was added once the final cut had been completed.
