I know there's been a lot of discussion and some frustration around the changes, especially regarding the "Random" option and the prevalence of routes in online play. Hear me out...I think this patch, and the routes themselves, have some serious merit that we might be overlooking. There are 202 of them, some are better than the Time Trial courses themselves and some aren't that great although they can improve with more data from Nintendo observing more people playing them.
While many players were using the Random selection to consistently get traditional three-lap races, the new patch makes it more likely to encounter the connected routes. At first glance, this might seem like a step backward for those who prefer classic racing. However, I believe this change encourages players to truly engage with the World aspect of Mario Kart World.
The interconnected routes are a core design philosophy of this game. They're not just filler; they're an opportunity for new strategic depth. These longer, more open sections introduce different item dynamics, more opportunities for dynamic driving beyond just tight turns, and a greater emphasis on maintaining speed and avoiding chaos over a more extended period. It's less about memorizing perfect lines on a closed circuit and more about adapting to the evolving landscape and the flow of the race.
The new patch forces us to embrace this unique element of Mario Kart World. The sheer scale of 24 racers navigating these wider roads creates a different kind of intensity, and finding those subtle shortcuts or optimal lines within the open areas becomes a new challenge to conquer.
This isn't just about single-lap dashes. It's about endurance, item resource management, and strategic item usage across varied terrain. It adds a fresh layer that traditional Mario Kart doesn't offer. I think it deserves a fair shot. The routes have merit because they demand a different skillset and offer a unique, expansive racing experience. Although they do need some improvements it's not perfect.
I do think that there should be 7 options for online Grand Prix Race setting where it's 3 traditional Time Trial layouts, 3 routes, and 1 Random.
