The disruption of COVID-19 presents an opportunity to re-examine and articulate the goals of the liberal arts college. By examining the history of college in America and the intrinsic value of classical learning, we hope to address why studying the liberal arts during a pandemic is not only a worthwhile activity, but a necessary one.
Dr. Joshua Kinlaw of The King’s College is joined by Dr. Zena Hitz of St. John’s College, Dr. Joseph Loconte of The King’s College and Heritage Foundation, and Dr. Jessica Hooten Wilson of the University of Dallas. Speaking on “The History of the American College: Vocational, Liberal, or Both,” Dr. Joseph Loconte is Senior Fellow in Christianity and Culture at The King’s College and the Director of the Simon Center for American Studies at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C.
Zena Hitz (PhD, Princeton)
Speaking on “Theory versus Action: The Usefulness of ‘Useless’ Arts,” Dr. Zena Hitz is a Tutor at St. John’s College, Annapolis. Her book, Lost in Thought: The Hidden Pleasures of an Intellectual Life was published earlier this year by Princeton University.
Jessica Hooten Wilson (PhD, Baylor)
Speaking on “Teaching the Classics: Goodness, Truth, and Beauty in 2021,” Dr. Jessica Hooten Wilson is the Louise Cowan Scholar in Residence at the University of Dallas. She writes widely on twentieth- and twenty-first century literature.
