Here's something nobody talks about: the federal government routinely pays 3x-5x what the private sector pays for the exact same work. Not because they're stupid. Because the rules force them to.

I just looked at a $40,000 award to install some carpet and replace ceiling tiles. That's it. No demo of a building. No structural work. Carpet and ceiling tiles. Your neighborhood commercial GC would chase that job for eight or nine grand and feel lucky to get it.

So why does Uncle Sam pay $40K? A few reasons most contractors never wrap their head around:

First, the feds require bonding, insurance, prevailing wage, certified payroll, and a contractor who actually understands the FAR. That filters out 95% of the cheap guys before the solicitation even hits the street. Less competition = better pricing.

Second, the agency has a budget cycle. If the contracting officer has $40K sitting in a line item for floor and ceiling repair, they're not trying to save the taxpayer $32,000. They're trying to spend the money before it disappears. That's how government works whether you like it or not.

Third — and this is the one that matters — most contractors never even SEE these small dollar awards because they're hunting whales. They're chasing the $5M new construction jobs and ignoring the $40K carpet replacements that go out every single day on RFQs with almost no competition.

This is the lane. Small. Repeatable. Boring. Profitable. You knock out three or four of these a month and you're running a real business instead of begging for one big award that may never come.
