Why do so many expensive, well-built new houses look… off and confused? Meanwhile the hundred-year-old house down the street feels calm, balanced, and resolved, even if it’s smaller and simpler. The difference comes down to a handful of specific principles that traditional houses understood and that new houses ignore. In this video, I’m breaking down exactly what those principles are, with plans, photos, and diagrams so whether you’re building, renovating, or you just want to understand why some houses look “right”, this is for you!
Quick note: I grew up in Europe, studied at Cambridge, and have worked here most of my career, so this is the lens I see buildings through. Plenty of other building cultures answer the same human needs differently, and they're worth looking at too - perhaps in future videos 😊
