Why isn’t Flight Level 180 always usable? 🛫
In this video, we dive deep into transition altitude, altimeter settings, and how pressure variations affect your indicated altitude and the lowest usable flight level (LUFL).
When climbing through 18,000 feet, pilots switch to the standard altimeter setting of 29.92 inHg. But when pressure is unusually high or low, that change can make Flight Level 180 unusable — forcing ATC to assign FL190 or even FL200 to maintain proper separation.
You’ll learn:
✅ How altimeter pressure errors cause altitude differences across regions
✅ Why “east is odd, west is even” applies differently in the flight levels
✅ How ATC determines the lowest usable flight level in low-pressure systems
✅ Why your altimeter suddenly “drops” when you set 29.92
✅ How VFR and IFR separation is maintained through all of this
Perfect for IFR students, instrument pilots, and anyone preparing for a checkride or flight review.
