In this episode of Functional Philosophy, I answer the following questions:
1. So long as roads are ultimately government property, is it not normal that governments collect taxes to take care of these roads, bridges, etc? Just like waste, is it not OK to pay taxes and just let government take care of these things and not fuss about things like sewers and sewage plants?
2. If roads become private or company property, what about companies who don't want a sewer system underneath their roads, because of the added complexity or need to break up the road for maintenance on someone else's service? Sure, sewage companies could pay extra fees to keep sewers underneath roads, but everybody will need to pay more for waste or roads while, quality has not necessarily gone up for either of those two services.
3. Does government have a business saying how fast you can drive on a road when this road is privatized? Who decides? Is driving on a road at our own risk?
4. My father told me about Nestle and how they got local "monopolies” on water. In many regards, water and air have no real competitors. How bad is it that people get no water from their tap during times of relative drought due to a company selling water to the same community?
