Why Should You Wait to Start the Third Form in WIng Chun? (part 2)
Wing Chun today sells beginners WOoden Dummy and all kinds of fancy moves, but the tradition was to keep things secret along the way. Many think that is just to protect the teacher, but it is in fact a neccesary part of growth.
Wing CHun once only had a single long form, but it was spread out into three form in the 1900's. Grandmaster Yip Man taught several ways across his 50 years of teaching, and today, we can see three distinct phases of progress with a Yip Man Kung Fu students.
First a martial art student learns self defense stuff, then boxing. SNT
Second they learn to move around and do kick boxing,, even with some self defense for elbows and ground fighting.
Third, ontop of the Chum Kiu Kick boxing habits, a third method of training is added, and this distinctly changes the way the person moves and fights.
In fact, just adding the solo form in Wing Tsun, adding the Biu Tzu form, will begin to change the things a student does with their Chum Kiu CHi Sau drills. Same thing happens again latter when they add the wooden dummy.If a style offers students the forms one after the other they blur together in chi sau practice, and it is harder to add new qualities later.
