This is a clip from a one hour documentary my team and I made in 1990 for Turner Broadcasting, for Ted Turner really, about the State of South Carolina. We conducted careful casting to find the right folks to represent South Carolina, and there are amazing folks presented in this documentary.
This woman speaking was part of a movement of Americans returning to small towns from big cities, sometimes referred to as "reverse migration" or "rural return.” Many Americans had stories of returning to towns in South Carolina like Beaufort or Aiken or Abbeville .

Abbeville is a small town rich in history and Southern charm. It was established in the 18th century, with settlers arriving as early as the 1750s. Abbeville is known as the "Birthplace and Deathbed of the Confederacy." The town hosted the first public meeting to discuss secession, and it is also where Confederate President Jefferson Davis held his last council of war.

Downtown Abbeville is historic. The Abbeville Opera House, built in 1908, is still in use today for theatrical productions and community events. The charming town square features well-preserved architecture, quaint shops, and restaurants, offering a glimpse into the town’s past. Abbeville is known for its beautiful Victorian and antebellum homes, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Burt-Stark Mansion: This historic home is where Jefferson Davis held his final meeting with Confederate officers, marking the end of the Confederacy. The mansion is now a museum open to the public.

Abbeville hosts various events throughout the year, including the Spring Festival, which features music, crafts, and local food, and the Hogs and Hens Festival, celebrating BBQ and live music.

Agriculture plays a significant role in Abbeville’s economy, with many farms and local produce markets. The town supports small businesses from antique shops to local eateries, contributing to the local economy and providing unique shopping and dining experiences.

There were several reasons why individuals and families choose to return to small towns.

Lower Cost of Living: Small towns offered a lower cost of living compared to big cities.

Less Congestion and Noise: The slower pace and quieter environment of small towns were appealing to those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Closer to Family: Many people returned to small towns to be closer to family and to take care of aging parents or reconnect with relatives.

Sense of Community: Small towns had more tight-knit communities where people knew each other and there was a stronger sense of belonging and support.

Remote Work Opportunities: The rise of remote work allowed many people to work from anywhere, making it feasible to live in a small town while maintaining a job based in a larger city.

Less Stressful Commutes: Small towns offer shorter, less stressful commutes compared to the often grueling commutes in large metropolitan areas.

Starting Businesses: Many returnees found opportunities to start their own businesses in small towns, taking advantage of lower overhead costs and a supportive local customer base.

Revitalizing Local Economies: Returning residents played a significant role in revitalizing local economies by opening new businesses, restoring old buildings, and bringing fresh ideas and energy to the community.

Closer to Nature: Small towns provided greater access to outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and other recreational opportunities that were harder to find in urban environments.

Agricultural Interests: Some returnees were interested in farming or homesteading, taking advantage of the more available and affordable land in rural areas.
