In this educational Vocal Coach analysis, Beth Roars breaks down Shakira’s live performance of “La Pared”, from her 2007 live performance, whilst touring her work from the 2005 album Fijación Oral Vol. 1. We explore the vocal choices that make her tone so instantly recognisable.
Beth looks at Shakira’s bright, focused sound, unusual tongue shape, and defined yodels/flips between chest voice and head voice. Her rolled Rs, changing vibrato speed combined with tremolo, growl and emotional directness all make up her unique sound. This brilliant live performance of “La Pared” (the internal wall) connects to the changing colours and intensity in Shakira’s voice.
Despite receiving criticism for her voice as a child, rather than smoothing out the qualities that make her different, Shakira has leant into them. This analysis explores how her unique choices serve the emotion of the song and creates a vocal identity that could only be Shakira.
