Recently theoretical physicist Sabine Hossenfelder became the latest in a long line of smart people to make the claim of determinism, and that therefore there is no such thing as free will. Here I examine her claim, explain some problems with it, and step back to make some general comments about these claims of determinism and free will. Why do smart people make these claims?
