In this talk, we explain what Ranked Choice Voting is and discuss whether it is better than the typical plurality method of determining what the people want. We consider mathematically the various ways that a Ranked Preference Profile can be interpreted to obtain the will of the people. It turns out that this task is pretty hard to do and, in some sense, is impossible due to some pretty disappointing theorems about voting. But we discuss how we can determine what makes a voting system fair and how what rules we set determine what kinds of strategies candidates will employ to be elected. We just need to find a method that encourages strategies that are healthy, while discouraging strategies that are not.
I didn't say so in the video, but my favorite RCV method is the Coomb's Rule because of how it combats extreme candidates.
