🌋 Volcanoes don’t stop being dangerous just because they’ve been quiet.
On Réunion Island, volcanic eruptions are part of daily life. Since 1979, the Piton de la Fournaise volcano has erupted 84 times, most often safely contained within an uninhabited caldera.
But that familiarity can be deceptive.
“When eruptions happen far from towns, people tend to forget the risk,” explains Aline Pelletier, Director of the Piton de la Fournaise Volcanological Observatory. “Yet sooner or later, inhabited areas will almost certainly be threatened.”
Réunion is shaped by powerful volcanic forces — including two volcanoes, one active and one dormant for thousands of years. While explosive eruptions are rare, the risk is real for the entire island.
