Before the borders of the modern world were drawn, the A:shiwi—known today as the Zuni—traced their genesis to the depths of the earth. According to their most sacred histories, the earliest ancestors emerged from a series of four dark underworlds. Guided by divine forces, they climbed through realms of soot and algae, ascending by way of a spruce, an aspen, and finally a hollow reed, to greet the Sun Father. This profound emergence point, known as Chimik'yana'kya dey'a, is located deep within the Grand Canyon.

![The People Who Hunted with Dreams: Uncovering Naskapi Spirituality
The Naskapi occupy a unique space in the ethnographic landscape of North America. Linguistically and culturally part of the Innu-Montagnais complex, they are distinguished by their adaptation to the harsh, treeless interior of the Labrador Peninsula. The term Naskapi itself is a subject of historical layering. Early Jesuit missionaries and French explorers used it to describe the groups living beyond the reach of the St. Lawrence settlements. While some historical etymologies suggest a pejorative meaning—rude or uncivilized—derived from the dialects of their southern neighbors, the Naskapi have reclaimed and redefined their identity

![The Coahuiltecan | Native Tribes of the Texas-Mexico Border
The Rio Grande valley in what is now southern Texas and northern Mexico was home to many tiny, independent tribes of Native Americans known as the Coahuiltecan. The several tribes of Coahuiltecans were hunter-gatherers. Their population plummeted as a result of Old World illnesses and several small-scale conflicts with the Spanish, Apache, and other Indigenous people, who the Spanish first encountered in the 16th century.
The Coahuiltecan people were mostly compelled to live in substandard conditions following Texass separation from Mexico. The last known members of Coahuiltecan bands were discovered by ethnologist Albert Gatschet in 1886: two Pakawa, one Cotoname, and twenty-five Comecrudo. They resided in the vicinity of Reynosa, Mexico.
