Love it or hate it, it’s hard to deny the lasting impact the Metal Gear Solid series has had on the gaming industry. Its roots trace back to the NES, but for me, it all began when a polygonal Solid Snake emerged from the water at the docks of Shadow Moses in 1998. That moment hooked me, and Metal Gear Solid became one of my favorite franchises of all time—second only to Doom, of course. I was so obsessed that I bought a PlayStation 2 just for Metal Gear Solid 2, and later a PlayStation 3 solely to play Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. At the time, it felt like the final chapter of the series, and the hype surrounding it was unreal. Expectations were sky-high, and for fans like me who’d been riding the Hideo Kojima train for years, we were desperate for answers to lingering questions from the series’ convoluted lore.
