It’s official. After much anticipation, not least due to US President Donald Trump’s open lobbying to be the recipient, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, for her courageous fight for democracy and human rights in her country. Her recognition by the Norwegian Nobel Committee highlights the global struggle against authoritarianism and the vital role individuals play in defending freedom, justice, and peace. Consequently, this year’s award highlights not only Venezuela’s ongoing crisis, but also frames the wider challenge of preserving democratic values in an era of rising autocracy.
Unsurprisingly, the announcement also sparked renewed discussion about Trump’s own eligibility for the award, given his public pursuit of the Peace Prize has been both controversial and revealing. Despite support from several governments, his record stood in stark contrast to the ideals Alfred Nobel envisioned, marked by broken treaties, regional tensions, and disregard for humanitarian principles.
