Director of photography Gustav Danielsson takes Collider behind the scenes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, beginning with the seven-on-seven fighting sequence. Rather than building the entire environment with green screen or an LED studio, the production staged the fight on location, using fog and morning mist to help create its gritty atmosphere. VFX was then used to finesse elements such as the smoke and fog.
Danielsson explains how the battle was carefully storyboarded, how a wire-mounted camera created a fast-moving shot over the horses, and how trained horses and a mocap horse were combined to make the action appear dangerous while keeping the animals safe.
The cinematographer also reveals how Ireland’s famously unpredictable conditions affected the shoot. From matching rain and sunshine during Episode 1 to augmenting firelight as natural dusk disappeared, Danielsson explains how the crew worked with changing light rather than against it. He closes by discussing Dunk’s Episode 5 flashback, including the Flea Bottom locations that helped broaden the world of the series.
