In his 2026 Lowy Institute Media Lecture, Dennis Richardson AC said that while we obsess over how media is changing — AI, social media, the 24-hour news cycle etc. — the real story is what hasn't changed: journalism's enduring role in holding power to account.

Richardson reflected on where the media does its best work and the hard tensions it must constantly navigate between press freedom, national security, justice, and social cohesion.
