SUNY ESF researchers were recently joined by The New York Times on a boat trip to do field work related to their project on the cause of the "Seneca Drums," loud unexplained booming noises that have puzzled Seneca Lake residents and recreationists for centuries.

The noises are unpredictable and have been attributed to lore such as a god being mad at a warrior and a Revolutionary War soldier trying to find his regiment.

Our team is collecting gases and viewing imagery of the lake bed to study and determine the scientific cause. Can you believe that Seneca Lake has craters the size of football fields?
