The question of suffering is inseparable from the question of freedom. If God had destroyed Lucifer the moment rebellion appeared, the rest of creation might have obeyed Him, but would that obedience have come from love, or fear? True love requires the possibility of rejection. Freedom has to be real, even when that freedom is tragically misused.
Lucifer’s rebellion introduced a new claim: that God’s ways were restrictive, that created beings could find something better by choosing their own path. Rather than instantly silencing that claim, God allowed rebellion to reveal where it actually leads. Human history has become a devastating record of that experiment: pride, deception, violence, addiction, exploitation, suffering, and death.
God’s laws, then, are not arbitrary rules designed to control us. They are boundaries of life, love, and harmony. Like a father warning a child not to touch an electrical outlet, the command is not meant to steal freedom or happiness. It is given because the father understands consequences the child cannot yet see. Distrust says, “Maybe he’s keeping something good from me.” Experience eventually reveals why the warning existed.
The tragedy of Earth demonstrates what life apart from God ultimately produces. And when evil is finally ended, obedience will not be based on ignorance or terror. Creation will have seen both ways fully revealed and will be able to say by genuine free choice: God’s ways are good. His law is just. I freely choose to obey Him.
