Responding to questions on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent remarks about gold purchases, foreign holidays and destination weddings, PM-EAC member Sanjeev Sanyal said gold may appear to be an investment for individuals but, from a national economic perspective, it is largely consumption. He argued that large amounts of capital remain tied up in gold holdings that could otherwise be mobilised for productive economic activity.
