$Pine Island Glacier: Warm Currents, Fractures and Ice Loss Mapped From Space Satellites and supercomputers reveal how warm currents are undermining Pine Island Glacier. See the hidden mechanics of a warming planet and the maps that could guide our response. A revolution in map making is changing how we see Earth. From early latitude and longitude to modern radar, radio and light waves from orbit, scientists now fuse vast data into living maps of winds, currents, heat, smoke and the carbon cycle. Working with the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA), teams stitch high resolution images into detailed 3D views on the Blue Water supercomputer to track landscapes in near real time. The picture is sobering. NASA records show global temperature up 1.2 C since 1880, and scientists warn that passing 1.5 to 2 C greatly raises catastrophic risk. Recent extremes echo that forecast: Hurricane Harvey dropped over a meter of rain on southeast Texas in 2017; Florence drenched the Carolinas with 10 trillion gallons in 2018; in 2022, one third of Pakistan flooded, nearly 2,000 people died and over a million homes were lost; eastern Kentucky saw deadly mountain floods; and Hurricane Ian struck Florida with winds over 200 kilometers per hour, a storm surge topping 15 feet and widespread 1,000 year flooding, with insured losses near $75 billion. Across the Midwest, heavy rain events now bring over 40 percent more rain than 50 years ago. Heat, drought and megafires have more than doubled land burned since the 1990s. At the poles, remote sensing captures rapid ice change. On Vavilov Island, part of a mini ice sheet sped to 25 meters per day and shed almost 10 billion tons of ice. Greenlands Yakubshavn Glacier now flows over 40 meters per day, four times faster than in the 1990s, as surface meltwater lubricates its base. In West Antarcticas Amundsen Sea, warm currents are scouring Pine Island Glacier from below, thinning the shelf, lifting it off rocky ridges and fracturing the front into an armada of icebergs. Denman Glacier sits above Earths deepest canyon, 3.5 kilometers below sea level, and is beginning to speed up. Sea level rise could reach a meter or more by centurys end. Two meter elevation maps foreshadow impacts for Miami, New Orleans and Amsterdam, and over time parts of London, Shanghai and New York, as 40 percent of the worlds people living near coasts face mounting risk. Maps also point to solutions. High resolution surveys across sub-Saharan Africa show arid and semi arid regions store up to 40 percent of Earths surface carbon. In northern Senegal and beyond, every tree counts. The Great Green Wall plans billions of acacia trees, while global initiatives target a trillion trees by 2030 and 30 percent of land and ocean protected as wilderness. Falling costs are driving rapid adoption of renewables, with clean energy now employing more people than fossil fuels. With satellites charting CO2, clouds, winds and ice, we can navigate risk, cut emissions and adapt.
