Civil war in Britain is ‘inevitable’, prophesised Elon Musk after riots broke out following the Southport murders last summer. While we’ve yet to see tanks in Whitehall, there’s certainly a great deal of tension in the air.
Headlines warn of a ‘powder keg of tensions and grievances’ and caution we’re ‘lurching towards civil war, and nobody knows how to stop it’. A new government commission on cohesion rings alarm bells over ‘creeping balkanisation and extremism’ while Lisa Nandy predicts Labour’s northern heartlands ‘could go up in flames’. A YouGov survey suggests that a third of the public now believe civil war is likely to occur in Britain within the next 10 years.
How do we get the balance right between valuable insights and excessive fearmongering – and are critics right to worry that catastrophism risks escalating tensions?
