The era of the "yuck factor" is fading as California pivots toward a more sophisticated and necessary understanding of the water cycle.
Modern treatment technology now allows utilities to reach levels of purity that were once unthinkable, transforming wastewater into a strategic asset for a state facing an increasingly volatile climate.
The move toward beneficial reuse is becoming a cornerstone of regional water security—a transition highlighted by Christoph Dobson, General Manager of the Sacramento Area Sewer District.
"Water reuse has become a lot more accepted just in the community... the state is starting to sort of incentivize and move the regulations more towards how can we incentivize getting back to the carrot and the stick, whereas that carrot so that we can actually, you know, put this water to beneficial use in recycled water projects."
