Indian Painbushes in the Genus Castilleja are hemi-parasitic plants that suck the water and nutrients from other plants. They're also a traditional medicine in people of the Americas. But, it's oddly also toxic. Why was this? I had to do a deep dive.
It turns out it will collect Selenium from the surrounding areas to put into it's tissue. Daily doses are about 50 mcg. We need plants with Se. If you live in a low Se area, you will need to eat plants like this to be healthy. It also seems to serve as an anti-inflammatory and possibly has anti-tumor properties. Just remember that doses over 400 mcg of Se are toxic so don't eat too much!
