I came close to buying 35 acres of land here in the Dominican Republic, and the deal fell through over a difference in price negotiation. Looking back at that deal, It would have been a big mistake. I should have offered to just buy half. But it’s to late.

1. I love the idea of Homesteading
- Living on a farm with your family
- Doing honest work
- Living off the land and knowing what you’re eating
I don’t mean off-grid:
- I want electricity
- Running water
- And modern conveniences like internet and plumbing
- And if I can get from the grid great, but I also want to work on independence too, just in case you know
Why I like:
- Nutrition and independence are the two main things that led me to this idea
- The minute farming became profit-driving, it led to companies pumping our foods with a bunch of chemicals that can cause problems in the long term
- And also during 2020 I learned that, if things get ugly I have no way to truly survive independently really
2. I’m Fully aware that this is not Investment ( and most people buying land for this purpose should be too )
- An investment is putting your money into something that makes you an appropriate return without risking your capital too much
- Buying land like this ( for personal reasons and ideals, is not about investing really)
- But life Is not about investing this way either
Having Land
- Provides housing
- Provides Food
- Could eliminate utility bills
The point:
- What you choose to depend on is up to you
- And you don’t have to always be thinking about making more money really
- If you don’t need more money ( think about that )
3. What I’m looking to do with the Land
- This is really not that complex
- Its simple but I think really important
First: Honest Work
- For myself and especially for my kids
- Kids these days are just tablet addicts
- And parents are phone addicts
- I don’t like it
- So having a farm, to go to, and to do work each day is great to instill values in myself and my kids
Second Food:
- I didn’t really think this was that important ( until I started actually seeing my family grow old with a lot of health issues )
- Growing your own food and raising your own food, means you can control the quality of the food
- Doing that also gets you into shape and exercise
4. My Plan ( the Bad news )
- I don’t think I’ll be able to buy this land anytime soon
- Currently, we’ve updated for a more transitional plan
- To live in a small town and have land close to take off (at least less than 15M away)
This may not sound like a big deal and it's not really
- But this means One house in a town and buying land
- This is double expenses
- Those will require some more patience to acquire the land
Benefits:
- You live in a Town
- You get to learn and experiment
- I can still get the food, do the work, and get what I really want
Con:
- Is just patients
But there is another idea:
- Buy a good enough plot of land in Town to do the basic farming
- I was reading and it looks like 5-10 acres is more than enough
- I have no idea why I wanted so much ( greed maybe )
