I’ve made many videos about Iaido, the art of katana drawing. However, I always get comments from people saying that Iai is bullshi* and that the Kata we train will never actually happen in real life. Well, most of these keyboard fighters don’t understand why we train Kata. But they actually have a point. That’s because Iai mainly developed during the peaceful… The beloved, EDO PERIOD!! It developed so much because this era was so peaceful that most samurai hardly had any opportunity to draw their katana. They might train Kenjutsu/Kendo with wooden and bamboo swords, but their real katana was just something they carried in their everyday life. But it’d be shameful if a samurai couldn't draw and sheathed his katana, right? That’s why samurai started Iai training. In other words, the main purpose of practicing iai was "to remember how to handle the katana.” Of course, assumptions were made to some extent based on actual battles, but whether or not it could be used was not the most important aspect. The main purpose of iai was to maintain the dignity of the samurai.
