Why would I walk away from a maker YouTube channel with more than 200,000 subscribers? Because a large audience isn’t always the right audience for the business you’re trying to build.
I accidentally built a successful YouTube channel for makers while trying to grow a product brand. Over time, I realized I had one foot in two different businesses, and the channel’s audience, content and purpose were no longer aligned with where I wanted to go.
In this video, I explain how the channel grew, why subscriber count alone can be a misleading measure of success, what happened when I sold the original brand but kept the channel, and why my next product business will start with a much more intentional audience strategy.
This isn’t a story about abandoning makers or throwing away a successful channel. It’s about recognizing when your content strategy, personal brand and business model are pulling in different directions and having the courage to make a change before the wrong kind of growth takes you further off course.
If you’re a maker, creative entrepreneur or handmade business owner trying to grow through YouTube, storytelling and brand building, this video will help you think differently about audience growth, content-market fit and what a valuable community actually looks like.
