I very often use Reclaimed Wood for projects and even though I try my hardest to remove all the old Nails and Screws, it is possible to miss some, or for them to be buried and hidden deep in the Wood.
Even freshly cut Wood can contain traces of Metal, such as Barbed Wire, Fence Fixings and even Bullets. Metal objects can be embedded in a tree branch or trunk when the tree is very young and as the tree grows, it covers the object or the object disappears into the tree becoming invisible to the naked eye.
Catching a Metal object can ruin or damage a Saw, a Hand Plane or a Chisel easily, so I like to run a small Metal Detector over the surface to give me the best chance of knowing that the material is free from Metal objects.
I bought the Metal Detector in a local shop and it does not have any makers name on it. I searched the internet and these seem to be a common style and inexpensive to buy.
