Maschine is really nice and quick when it comes to laying down your beats, samples and melodies, but I’ve always found the arranger too restrictive for my needs. Now, don’t get me wrong, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since I view Maschine as a groovebox, and grooveboxes generally have pattern-based sequencers that don’t even try to compete with DAWs.
I first bought my MK1 in 2010 to replace my MPC 1000. So I’ve never expected it to be as flexible for arrangement as a full DAW like Ableton Live. And with the addition of Clips in Maschine it’s actually more flexible than most grooveboxes and if it fits your needs, it’s good enough to make complete tracks.
But for me - I have to admit that I have never used Clips. Every time I think about using them, I realise that it would be much faster and easier for me to just export to Ableton. And having your tracks already in audio when you work in your Ableton session nudges you towards doing some cool audio edits - you can easily reverse, stretch and pitch shift your sound right on the timeline.
