Welcome to another episode of Why I Didn’t… the mostly useless series where I tell you why I did NOT pursue a specific specialty. In this episode, I cover radiology.
As a radiologist, you’ll spend your shifts reading images that come in from all over the hospital, so you get to see a wide variety of pathologies. You get to be a puzzle solver, using the information you’ve learned from med school and residency, doctor’s clinical notes, and the image in front of you to determine what’s wrong. But the downside is you don’t get a whole lot of patient interaction, and you’ll spend a lot of your day in reading rooms staring at computer screens in near silence.
Overall, as a radiologist, you get the joy of critical thinking and medical diagnosis. You also get to avoid the pain of excess admin and paperwork, but there’s an often lonely price to pay, and only you can decide whether or not the pros outweigh the cons.
