Wizards and Warriors animated fantasy documentary lore video series on GRR Martin's world of Ice and Fire continues. Previously, we have covered the story of the rise and fall of the Targaryens (youtu.be/elBPgLSVGk0) the story of the Game of Thrones before the Winds of Winter (youtu.be/7AkZoix8-BY), and the rise and fall of Valyria (youtu.be/YaCIZ_Nt7SA), and a new series on the Dance of Dragons - the Targaryen Civil war (youtu.be/tTm8DZ40r4Q). Nearly two centuries before Game of Thrones, the Dance of the Dragons tore House Targaryen apart and destroyed most of its dragons. Yet one unlikely rider survived: Nettles, a lowborn orphan with no proven connection to Valyria.
In Fire and Blood, Nettles does what generations of Targaryens claimed should be impossible. Rather than relying on blood or magic, she earns the trust of the vicious wild dragon Sheepstealer by bringing him food day after day. She becomes a dragonseed, fights in the Battle of the Gullet, helps Rhaenyra seize King's Landing, and joins Daemon Targaryen in the hunt for Aemond and Vhagar.
But when Hugh Hammer and Ulf White betray the Blacks, Rhaenyra turns against the remaining dragonseeds. Accused of treason and sorcery, Nettles is forced to flee into legend and disappears from history. Her ultimate fate remains one of Westeros's greatest mysteries.
This video explores Nettles's origins, her bond with Sheepstealer, her disputed relationship with Daemon, and why House of the Dragon transferred her story to Rhaena Targaryen. More importantly, it asks what Nettles reveals about dragonlore itself. Did Valyrian blood ever matter, or did the Targaryens build their power on a myth that one determined girl finally exposed?
