When King Henry VIII died on 28 January 1547, he expected to be remembered with one of the most magnificent royal tombs ever constructed in England. Instead, his remains were placed inside a relatively modest vault beneath the floor of St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. His enormous planned monument was never completed, his burial place was largely forgotten, and when the vault was rediscovered centuries later, his coffin was found badly broken.
