Why do ham radio, marksmanship, and fieldcraft belong together? Because real preparedness requires more than radios, batteries, or isolated technical skills.
During a three day cross training exercise in Puolanka, Finland, we combined off grid HF communications, practical marksmanship, hunting, and fieldcraft. Operating from a cabin surrounded by foothills, we used a Lab599 TX500MP, LiNK500MP, and N9SAB 80 meter end fed half wave antenna to establish Winlink and JS8Call communications with only 10 watts.
We also used FT8 to evaluate propagation into Europe, Iceland, Canada, the United States, and Asia. At the rifle range, we tested a Sako 75 in .22 250 with the FX True Ballistic Chronograph before moving into the Finnish swamps for practical hunting and fieldcraft training.
