End-to-end encryption is fantastic, but email has many challenges. The standards are overcomplicated and poorly adopted, key distribution doesn't work outside walled gardens, and the result is healthcare-style 'you have an email' messages that take you to a web portal, which isn't really email anymore. Fastmail wants E2EE but refuses to compromise on ease of use until the technology can stay open, federated, and actually work like email.
