We all know the New Kingdom mummies from ancient Egypt were preserved with a certain sophistication and advanced skill that we are still mesmerized by to this day.
But what none of us knew is that these same techniques were already being carried out in the same fashion 1000 years earlier according to a study done on the body of a high ranking Noblemen named Khuwy.
As you can imagine, researching mummies and their tombs is a painstaking process that can take years, thankfully it’s always worth it as it shows us more pieces of the puzzle that is the ancient Egyptian Civilization.
The research showed that the mummy of Khuwy was far older than previously assumed, 1000 years older to be exact.
The mummy showed that the mummification techniques in the old kingdom were far more advanced than thought possible, they’ve never discovered an Old Kingdom mummy that was mummified using the techniques used 1000 years later.
According to Egyptologist Salima Ikram, head of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo and Leading Expert on the History of Mummification, this find has to potential for the history books to have to get changed, as the books about the history of mummification and the history of the Old Kingdom will need to be revised.
She said; “This would completely turn our understanding of the evolution of mummification on its head, the materials used, their origins and the trade routes associated with them will dramatically impact our understanding of Old Kingdom Egypt.
Up until this latest research it was believed that mummification in the Old Kingdom was quite simple, with some basic desiccation which wasn’t always succesful, they didn’t remove the brain and most of the time didn’t remove the internal organs either.
