Adobe Lightroom Smart Previews allow photographers to edit preview images on-the-go by creating smaller DNG versions of offline photos. Once connected to the original RAW file, the edits made to the preview sync to the photo easily and automatically. Like magic!
While not intended, previews are also a great (smaller) backup and will greatly increase the performance of Lightroom since it has less data to handle and work through when editing Smart Previews.
