Elizabeth I and Mary I were two of the most important queens in English history. They were half-sisters, daughters of Henry VIII, and the first two women to rule England in their own right for a significant period. Yet they were divided by religion, family history and politics. Mary was a committed Roman Catholic, while Elizabeth established a Protestant religious settlement that shaped England for generations. Considering their differences, it seems extraordinary that their coffins should rest together in the same vault at Westminster Abbey.
