What does it mean to eat sanely and joyfully in a world of ultra-processed food, GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, and nonstop food noise? In this conversation with Jeff Siegel, we explore “Food 2.0,” your inner eaters, and how to end the civil war between mind and body around food.
This episode explores what it means to eat sanely and joyfully in an age of ultra-processed food, GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, and endless conflicting nutrition advice—through the lens of Jeff Siegel’s “Eating 2.0” and Integral theory.
Jeff begins with his origin story: as a teenager he developed severe anorexia, dropping to a dangerously low weight while locked in a “civil war” between his mind and his body. That crisis sent him through neuroscience, behavioral biology, Eastern philosophy, and Integral theory as he tried to understand what had gone wrong with his eating—and how to help others heal theirs.
Together we map eating across four dimensions: biochemistry and metabolism, our inner stories and emotions, cultural norms and diet culture, and the wider food system of industrial agriculture and Food 2.0. At the heart of the episode is Jeff’s “inner eaters” model—Survival, Pleasure, Social, Strategic, and Ecological eaters—and how most of us let one or two parts run the show.
We look at how Food 2.0 is engineered to hijack those inner eaters, how GLP-1 drugs can quiet appetite without automatically creating wisdom, and how gender, trauma, and intergenerational messaging shape our bodies and behavior. The aim isn’t rigid restriction or endless indulgence, but an integrated, flexible intimacy with food that honors your body, psyche, relationships, and the planet.
