In his interview, Jacob Hansen never once quotes from or references the Book of Mormon. It’s no wonder—he would have had to confront the clear differences between what the Book of Mormon actually teaches and what the modern LDS Church teaches today.
Rather than relying on the Book of Mormon, he turns to later teachings from Joseph Smith and other church traditions that came after it was published. This pattern is common: the LDS Church, the RLDS/Community of Christ, and many other Mormon offshoots often set aside their original book of scripture in favor of later developments.
We believe the Book of Mormon is the word of God. Its message is centered on Jesus Christ. It does not contradict the Bible—in fact, it beautifully complements and clarifies it. The Book of Mormon powerfully reinforces the core doctrines of mercy, justice, repentance, salvation, and eternal life so they cannot be misunderstood.
Above all, it testifies of the atonement of Jesus Christ. It presents Jesus as God Himself who took on flesh, came to earth, and died for our sins. It is a sacred record of the descendants of Joseph—specifically the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh—preserved for our day.
The Bible was originally written in languages such as Hebrew and Greek before being translated into English. Because of this, many different English versions exist. Each translation is the result of careful work by scholars, linguists, and translators who select the words they believe best convey the original meaning. In contrast, the Book of Mormon was translated only once—by the gift and power of God. Using divinely prepared instruments. The Lord Himself guided the process, removing human interpretation and choosing words that precisely express the meaning He wants us to understand. Translated one time by the gift and power of God!! This is an extraordinary gift that helps us clearly know what we need for our salvation and for building a personal relationship with our Creator.
