In this video I explain the weird existence of Büsingen am Hochrhein, a 7.6-square-kilometer German territory trapped entirely inside Swiss borders. Stemming from a 1693 religious kidnapping and an Austrian geopolitical grudge, this enclave bypassed the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire, both World Wars, and the creation of the European Union. Today, its 1,600 or so residents live in what is, essentially, a dual reality: two postal codes, two phone prefixes, dual-jurisdiction police, and a not so great economic paradox where they pay high German income taxes while facing the expensive Swiss cost of living.
