Why does art created from a place of suffering and separation so often evoke a profound sense of unity in those who experience it?
Rupert says: ‘In order to write about your agony, you have to stand apart from it – otherwise you couldn’t describe it. The artist separates themselves from their experience, and in doing so places the listener in the same position – as the observer of the agony. It is not what the artist paints that matters, but where they paint from. In this way, even the darkest subject matter can take the viewer back to their true nature.
‘Art that tries too hard to evoke joy or unity very often fails, because it has a mission. Far more powerful is the work of someone who comes from this understanding without making any overt spiritual claim. Messiaen wrote his quartet in the most dire human circumstances and yet, as he said, it came from a place of peace and joy within him – and this is why it is hauntingly beautiful. As Camus wrote, in the depths of winter there is an eternal summer – the light of being which shines eternally, even in the darkest places.’
