OK this may sound like a silly questions, but have you ever wondered how a massive, heavy gate can be swung open with barely any effort? 🤔

Here’s the real question: Why can you move something so heavy with just a tiny push? The secret lies in physics—specifically torque, force, and pivot points.

Try this: push the gate near the hinge, and it barely budges. But push near the edge, and it swings open effortlessly. That’s torque in action! It’s the same reason using a long wrench makes loosening a bolt easier.

But before we dive deeper, let’s take a quick detour into Newton’s Laws of Motion (don’t worry, I promise to keep it simple!). Imagine my trusty compass floating in space. If I push it, it moves in a straight line—because force = mass × acceleration (hello, Newton’s Second Law!). The heavier the object, the more force it takes to move it. That’s called inertia—an object’s resistance to change.
