Why do we call it the environment? The word itself suggests that nature is something outside of us, separate from who we are.

But the universe is not separate from you. The air you breathe becomes your body. The water you drink becomes your cells. The trees release the oxygen that fills your lungs, and every breath you exhale nourishes them in return. Life is not happening around you. You are participating in it.

When you stop seeing nature as your surroundings and begin seeing it as an extension of yourself, care no longer comes from obligation. It arises naturally, because you recognize that what you do for the Earth, you also do for yourself.
