Carrier crabs have specially adapted legs that they use to carry living invertebrates like sponges and corals. Scientists are still trying to work out the exact reasons for this carrying behavior. The carried items could be used to distract predators, or to provide a physical or chemical shield. We filmed these carrier crabs during a sub dive in the Azores in 2023.
