Earlier this week, we gave a big shout-out to some of our most curious, clever, and misunderstood residents—raccoons! 🦝💚
At our TIERART Wild Animal Sanctuary, 24 raccoons—from playful 1-year-olds to wise 14-year-olds—have found a safe haven filled with care, compassion, and second chances.
Did you know? Raccoons were first brought to Germany nearly 100 years ago for their fur. When released into the wild, they adapted quickly and spread across the country. But today, they face year-round hunting, even during seasons when they’re raising their young. Often unfairly blamed for various issues, raccoons have become scapegoats in a world they never chose. 💔
Despite the challenges, our team at TIERART remains committed. A few years ago, we built a new enclosure to meet the growing need—but our capacity is now full. Every raccoon here is a reminder of why sanctuaries like ours matter. 🌳
Let’s celebrate these resilient creatures and raise awareness about their plight. Every life deserves protection and a place to call home. 💚

Walk like the world is yours… because Kali certainly does. 🦁
Once part of South Africa’s “Golden Pride,” Kali and nine other lions were given a second chance after FOUR PAWS stepped in at the request of authorities. Following months of waiting and careful preparation, they made their journey to safety arriving at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in November 2022. 🌄
And today? Kali is living life on his own terms. From playful wrestling matches to carefree rolls in the grass, and yes, even the occasional backflip he’s thriving exactly as a lion should. 🧡

We’re in the final stages of preparation to welcome Mici to her new home at BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach! 🐻💚
Our team is buzzing with excitement as we get everything ready for her big arrival. From a cosy den to a lush green enclosure, and round-the-clock care from her dedicated caretakers – we’re making sure Mici has everything she needs for a fresh start.
Mici has spent most of her life in captivity at a restaurant near Bled, Slovenia. Her owner has agreed to voluntarily hand her over to us and we can’t wait to offer her everything she needs for a species-appropriate life. ♥️

Vet Check Update from Azerbaijan 🐾
During our recent trip to Azerbaijan, our trusted vets Julia and Frank from IZW in Berlin carried out their third veterinary mission in the country. This time, it was a special one – they treated the last two out of 21 captive bears currently under the care of the government! ✨
Mother-and-daughter duo Magdela and Aynur received a general health check-up and treatment where necessary.
🩺 Magdela:
Magdela was in good shape overall, though she had a mild case of diarrhoea for which she received antibiotics. She is also missing a few claws and toes due to unknown reasons. Our vets removed two damaged teeth and prescribed anti-inflammatory medication. 🔬
🩺 Aynur:
Magdela’s daughter Aynur is smaller than she should be for her age and recovering from a bacterial infection that caused diarrhoea and gut inflammation. 🦠
Unfortunately, Aynur had several broken teeth, most likely from bar biting. They were safely removed, and she was prescribed antibiotics and pain relief. Julia and Frank also found a small scar on her eye, but thankfully this does not seem to affect her vision!
In the course of the three vet missions Julia and Frank have also castrated all male bears so that no unwanted breeding can happen anymore. Were incredibly glad we could contribute to improving the lives of these bears and thank all stakeholders on site for their trust and support ! 🐻

Together with our Chief Programme Officer, Luciana DAbramo, the on-site teams first task at the former zoo Luján was to map all enclosures and classify the animals according to their level of need. 📋🐾

Even though we had previously visited the site, it was still overwhelming to see so many animals in urgent need of care. 💔 Years and years of experience in the field now prove invaluable — and deeply necessary. 💪
Our team worked tirelessly to adapt the existing enclosures to improve husbandry management, provide more space, and enhance animal safety. Transport crates were also built, allowing the team to transfer animals to other enclosures on the premises without having to anaesthetise them. 🦁
The goal is to get everything ready for the veterinary assessment, during which many of these animals will receive a proper medical examination for the very first time in their lives. 🩺
Lioness Lucy will be one of the first animals to be examined, together with tigress Flora, who suffers from severely ingrown nails causing her intense pain and difficulty moving properly, as well as the two bears, Gordo and Florencia. 🐻🐻
We are proud of what has already been achieved, and we are eager to move ahead with the veterinary checks for the animals. ✨️
